How much does it cost?

The total cost for volunteering with Zawadi La Tumaini is $200 per week or $800 for one month

What does the trip cost cover?  

  • Airport pick up and drop off 
  • All outreach and project supplies and fees 
  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner (three meals a day) 
  • Unlimited access to fresh, filtered drinking water 
  • Electricity 
  • Transportation to outreaches and activities during organization operational hours 
  • Single bed with full bedding in dormitory-style volunteer bedroom 
  • Mosquito nets over bed 
  • Access to full bathroom with shower 
  • Access to full kitchen (stove, refrigerator, sink) 

Where will I be living? 

Volunteers will be living on the same campus as our children's home in a separate volunteer quarters.

We recommend you allow a weekly budget of $60 for your own expenses such as eating out, wifi + phone data, beverages, and entertainment. If you are going on safari, other excursions, or souvenir shopping the budget will rise. 

How do I obtain a Kenyan Visa? 

Kenyan Visa's can be purchased upon arrival in the NBO international airport for $50 USD or if you'd like to purchase your visa before your arrival into Kenya, you can purchase an e-visa by following this link. Please allow ten business days for your e-visa to process. 

What immunizations do I need?

Please make arrangements to visit a travel clinic or personal physician a couple months before your trip in order to get the necessary prescription /vaccinations you will need for your trip. We strongly recommend the following vaccinations:   

  • Yellow Fever
  • Typhoid
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis A

You will need a prescription for Malaria prevention and an antibiotic in case of travelers diarrhea

Flight Information

Volunteers are responsible for booking their own flight to and from Nairobi, Kenya (NBO). There are a variety of safe, reliable airlines with service to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO.) 

What is the dress code?

  • Spaghetti straps, form fitting clothes, tube tops, mid drift, thighs and cleavage not permitted
  •  See through clothing is not permitted
  •  Pants and skirts must be below the knee
  • Shorts are not permitted
  • When swimming or participating in water sports a one piece, modest swimsuit is allowed. 

How can I contact my family back home?

  • You can purchase a sim card upon arrival and have full access to internet and data at your own expense. Friends and Family can stay updated with you through email, social media and texting/calling apps such as IMO and WHATSAPP. 

What language is spoken in Kenya?

English is spoken by everyone who has been to school and by most Kenyans living in the cities. The local language spoken in our area is Swahili. You can get by speaking English unless you travel into the slums in which case our organization will provide a social worker who will serve as a translator for all scheduled activities. 

What electrical devices can I bring/use?
